One Day in Philly

Email Me Biff on Twitter -
This past weekend was kinda’ strange for me. As folks following me at the various other places I post know, my cash flow has been tight as of late. No freelance work has come in and my emergency cash reserve was dropped by server costs. I had pretty much given up on hitting up WizardWorld Philly. Unbeknownst to me, my friends and family were dead set on my going down there and catching a bit of a kid-free break. = )

My buddies and I set out late on Friday and headed south to convention. Thanks to my father’s new GPS, we avoided damn near all of the roadwork that has been going on in CT for a bit now. The idea was simple: Get to Philly, hit the convention for one day, get back Saturday night/Sunday morning on less cash than any of us had really traveled on before. At least, traveled on to a comic convention.

We got there in time to join our fellow con-goers in what was an abnormally long wait. Thanks to last year’s low numbers and this year’s bigger guest list, there were more folks in line than the convention staff had manpower to deal with. They were good though and, after an hour or so, we got in. My buddies and I wanted to meet Bruce Campbell (amongst others). They got the opportunity of a lifetime. I… well, yeah. Luck was not on my side. I did get far more exercise trying to get in and out of the con floor than I have in the last year. Instead of more story, let’s just toss it to…

The List:

  • Cheesesteaks eaten – 3. One at the convention center and the usual Pat’s/Geno’s challenge. Again, Pat’s won.
  • Items bought – 1. A neat convention exclusive version of The Stuff of Legend. Some seriously good comic reading.
  • Free things received – A box of Magic 2010 half decks and a shot of Venom energy drink. I have yet to open the decks and that Venom stuff (I think that was the name) was shockingly good. I wasn’t jittery at all.
  • Times I missed out on meeting Bruce Campbell – 3. Not enough cash for a picture, was late to his Q & A panel and I had to choose between getting something signed or eating. Sorry Ash, but I choose food.
  • Star Trek cast members I was too shy to approach – 4. Though I really wanted to chat up Avery Brooks and Brent Spiner. Why no Patrick Stewart? He was practically inaccessible.
  • Catwomen seen – 1. Julie Newmar, one of only two actresses on the planet that can say they were Catwoman. No disrespect to the rest but she earned that title.
  • Adam Wests seen – Just One.

Next year, I really have to get my cash and my act together. When not placed against a larger con, WWPhilly is busy. It was a great trip if only for a day. = )
