Comic Apps A-Go-Go!

Email Me Biff on Twitter -
With the release of iOS 4 from Apple, I have taken a renewed interest in this little iPod Touch o' mine. Not in building an app for it (yet) but in the applications currently in the iTunes App store that I actually use. Well... the comics related ones, at least. = P

Mainstream Comics:

  • comiXology by comiXology - By far the handiest comics-related app I have. Not for reading comics but for loading up a pull list before I hit the shop. They do have one for reading comics (like Box 13) but I tend to leave that up to the next one.
  • iVerse by iVerse Media - Very similar to comiXology's Comics app in its layout. The biggest difference is visual. iVerse gives you a neat way to view you digital collection by having the covers all visible on shelves. Seriously, it's minor but I like it. Get both readers and you'll have the bulk of comics covered.
  • iBooks by Apple - You may be asking yourself why I put an Apple product on this list. Simple: It actually reads PDFs in a very nice manner. Did I mention it's free or that it comes with a copy of Winne the Pooh? No? Well, it's free and comes with a copy of Winne the Pooh. Not too shabby a deal.

Webcomics:

  • Little Gamers app - It's neat, it's free and it works. Visually, it reflects the comic perfectly. It has little downloadables for your iPhone/iPod Touch and an easter egg or two. Worth a glance on style alone.
  • PVP app - Nice and simple. It has the same mellow style as the site sports and was done up by the iVerse folks. It's a little persnickety about strip size but Scott doesn't do doubles all that often so it rarely (if ever) comes up. A Damn fine app for folks to read PVP on the go.
  • Blank It app - Very straightforward. It loads content from the site, you can go back and forth through the archive or you can go to the live site. Quite literally, the first one I heard about back when folks were thinking "Wouldn't it be neat to have an app?".

You may be wondering why I omitted the Marvel and DC comics app in this listing. Simply put, I haven't played around with them much and I get those comics from the store. As nice a job as the comiXology folks did on them, I kinda' use their Comics app for that stuff. This does not mean you shouldn't go grab them. By all means, show your fave studio some mobile love! = )
